The Oil Industry around the World.

One of the most important sectors contributing to the present day economic development is the global oil industry. Oil is a natural resource that is the driving force of transportation systems, industries, as well as, contributes to the manufacture of innumerable daily-traced products. Due to its significance, the oil industry is conducted in a multidimensional and multifaceted system of exploration, extraction, refining, and distribution.

Oil starts as organic matter that is buried on the surface of the earth several million years ago. With time, these materials are subjected to pressure and heat changing them into hydrocarbons that are stored in underground reservoirs. Geological survey, seismic visualization, and modern technologies are the techniques employed by energy companies to find these potential reserves.

After the discovery of oil deposits, drilling commences. Deep underground layers that contain crude oil are accessed using specialized drilling rigs. Such rigs are land based and sea based on oceans. Offshore drilling platforms are massive engineering platforms that are used to collect oil under the sea.

Upon extraction, crude oil should be taken to refineries. The pipeline is among the commonest modes of transportation since it enables uninterrupted and effective transportation of oil through a distance. Besides pipelines, there are also tanker ships and rail transport systems that are employed to transport the crude oil to the processing facilities.

The refineries are significant in refining the crude oil into the productive products. Crude oil is processed into various types of fuels including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and heating oil by heating, distillation of crude oil and chemical processing. These are necessary products in transportation, aviation and industrial machinery.

The global economy also has a close association with the oil industry. Other countries depend on oil exports as their leading revenue stream whereas some nations depend on imported oil to sustain the energy requirements. Due to this international interdependence, the oil markets tend to affect the economies and global trade.

The efficiency of oil extraction and ecological safety is still being enhanced through technological innovation. Advanced drilling equipment, enhanced transportation systems and digital monitoring systems assist companies to work more efficiently with minimum threats to the environment.
